Soup Bowls & Soup Spoons
Soup starts losing heat the moment it leaves the pot. It crosses the pass, waits for the server, travels across the floor and reaches a guest who may be talking before the first spoonful. The bowl decides how much of that heat survives the journey: its depth, its lid, its handle and even the saucer underneath all play a part.
Makrey has supplied ceramic tableware to Indian hotels and restaurants since 1981. This collection has 52 soup bowls, soup cups and soup spoons, from 200ml cups to 650ml bowls, including French onion bowls with lids, handled bowls, footed bowls, tub and kujja bowls, and ceramic soup spoons with rests, in glazes from black matt and cream matt dotted to copper antique and cheetah.
Ceramic Soup Bowls for Restaurants
Ceramic soup bowls come in the same glazes as our plates, so the soup course matches the rest of the table. The range suits soups on Indian and continental menus, from a clear tomato shorba to a thick cream of mushroom.
Round and Coupe Bowls
- 5.5" bowl (450ml): in black matt and palam green, a classic shape for cream soups and hot and sour soup.
- 4.75" bowl: 350ml in copper antique/cream, and 500ml in honey.
- Coupe bowl (4.5", 300ml): in Lw, golden yellow and cream matt painted.
- Rippled bowl (5", 350ml): in black shiny and black matt.
- Collar bowl (3.75", 350ml): in terracotta/cream.
Footed Bowls
A footed bowl stands on a small base, which lifts the soup and gives the table a more formal look. The footed rippled bowl comes in 4.5" (300ml) in cream matt dotted, 4.5" (250ml) in black shiny, and 6" (650ml) in black shiny. The footed hammered bowl is 5.5" (450ml) in diamond red.
Tub and Kujja Bowls
The tub bowl comes in 4" (250ml) and 5" (450ml), in copper antique, silver antique, grey speckles, cheetah and blue dip. The kujja bowl holds 350ml (4") in copper green, terracotta, silver antique, golden yellow, grey speckles, copper antique and black matt, and Kujja No.1 holds 250ml in painted terracotta. Both shapes suit Indian soups such as rasam, dal shorba and mulligatawny.
Soup Bowl with Lid
A soup bowl with lid keeps the soup hot and covered from the kitchen to the table, which helps for room service, banquets and slow courses. The lidded bowl with two handles comes in 4" (300ml) and 5.5" (500ml), in grey speckles, palam green and Lw. Lift the lid at the table, so the steam reaches the guest first.
French Onion Soup Bowls
French onion soup bowls in this range come with a handle, a lid or both. Choose from:
- With lid and handle (5.5", 400ml): in black matt, Lw, honey and terracotta.
- With lid and handle (5.5", 350ml): in golden yellow.
- Small with lid and handle (4.5", 350ml): in black matt.
- With lid (5.5", 400ml): in black matt.
- Curved with handle (4.5", 350ml): in black matt, with or without a dip cover.
The classic French onion soup is finished with bread and melted cheese on top. If you plan to grill the cheese under a salamander or in an oven, ask our team which pieces suit that use before you order.
Soup Bowl with Handle
A soup bowl with handle is easier for servers to carry hot and easier for guests to hold. Each handled soup bowl here suits a different style of service:
- Single handle (5.75", 450ml): in Lw, for a generous portion.
- Two ear handles (4.5", 325ml): in Lw, for a neat, balanced look.
- Handle with burner (5", 450ml): in cream matt dotted, set over a small burner to keep the soup warm at the table.
- Copper/SS bowl with two knobs (4.5", 300ml): for Indian fine dining and banquets.
Soup Cups and Soup Saucers
Soup cups suit clear soups, consommé, shorba and a soup course in a set menu. Our soup cups include:
- Curved soup cup: 3" (200ml) and 3.75" (450ml), in black matt.
- Soup cup (4.25", 350ml): in black matt/burgundy.
- Soup cup big (5", 550ml): in Lw.
- Soup cup with spoon and underliner (4.75", 300ml): in cream matt dotted.
The soup cup with spoon comes with its own underliner, which works as a soup saucer, so the server can carry it safely and the guest has a place to rest the spoon. The hat-shaped bowl (250ml) in silver antique also comes with a stand and underliner, as a soup bowl and plate set for formal service.
For soup served in a mug at a café or a quick lunch counter, see our mugs.
Soup Bowls and Spoons: Ceramic Soup Spoons
A ceramic soup spoon matches the bowl, so the soup course looks like one set. Our ceramic soup spoons come with a rest in black matt and cream matt dotted, and in golden yellow. Pair each soup bowl spoon with a bowl in the same glaze for a matching set. If you want soup bowls with spoons, choose a bowl and a ceramic spoon in the same finish, as most bowls and spoons are sold separately.
For metal soup spoons, see our hotel and restaurant cutlery, and for soup ladles on the buffet, our buffet spoons and ladles.
Soup Bowl Sizes: Which Size for Which Soup?
- 200ml to 250ml: clear soups, consommé, rasam and tomato shorba, or a soup shot in a tasting menu.
- 300ml to 350ml: a standard portion of cream soup, sweet corn soup, hot and sour soup or French onion soup.
- 450ml to 500ml: a generous portion, or a soup served as a light meal.
- 550ml to 650ml: large soup bowls for noodle soups, thukpa, wonton or dumpling soups, ramen-style bowls and sharing portions.
For noodle soup bowls, the 6" footed rippled bowl (650ml) and the 5" soup cup big (550ml) give room for noodles, broth and toppings. For dry noodles and pasta, see our pasta bowls.
Soup Bowls for Restaurants, Hotels and Banquets
For an à la carte restaurant, choose one main bowl and one soup cup in the same glaze as your plates, plus matching spoons. For room service and banquets, a soup bowl with lid keeps the soup hot on the way to the guest. For a fine dining table, set the soup bowl and its underliner on a show plate or charger plate. For buffets, serve soup from the counter into soup cups or tub bowls, set beside a stack of underliners.
For more small bowls in the same shapes, see our small serving bowls, and for plates to set under the bowl, our dinner and quarter plates.
Caring for Ceramic Soupware
Rinse each bowl soon after service, as dried soup is harder to remove. Wash with mild soap and warm water, and let hot bowls cool before washing, as a sudden change from hot to cold can crack ceramic. Wash lids and bowls separately, and store lids with a cloth between lid and bowl to protect the rims. If you plan to use any piece in a microwave or dishwasher, ask our team which pieces suit that use.
